MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality emerged victorious at the 5th<\/sup> International College Students\u2019 Barista Championship 2019!\u00a0 Our students from the Higher Diploma in Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management programme and Bachelor of Science (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management programme clinched all four gold medals and further adding to a string of victories for the year 2019.\u00a0 In an earlier national competition, the School of Tourism and Hospitality also clinched the 1st<\/sup> and 2nd<\/sup> positions during the Singapore National Cocktail Competition, 2019 (Student Category).<\/p>\n

This 5th<\/sup> Barista Championship, jointly organised by the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Zhejiang Technical Institute of Economics and UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training is an annual event that provides opportunities for students from around the world to learn from one another and hone essential industry skills.\u00a0 \u201cAt MDIS, we continually seek ways to engage our students in practical learning opportunities and this presented an excellent platform for our tourism and hospitality students to gain skills that are practical and relevant for the future. Such learning opportunities will provide students with exciting and important competitive advantages in an international workplace and give them enhanced career opportunities in tourism and hospitality,\u201d said Issac Joshua, Head of School, MDIS School of Tourism & Hospitality.<\/p>\n

During the three-day competition which began on 25 November, our students competed against 17 other passionate baristas from six other schools. The schools are Zhejiang Technical Institute of Economics from China, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta and Universitas Pendidikan of Indonesia, Kolej Komuniti Kuantan and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn from Malaysia and City of Glasgow College from Scotland, UK.<\/p>\n

The competition was divided into two categories namely \u201cEspresso and Cappuccino Competition\u201d and \u201cSignature Drink Competition\u201d and judged by industry experts such as from the Barista Guild Asia. \u00a0<\/em>Featuring a diverse range of international students, a common sight in the Singapore campus, MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality fielded a diverse team of students from Singapore, Philippines, Russia, Vietnam and India.<\/p>\n

Witnessed by more 300 students, teaching faculty members and distinguished guests, MDIS students, Ms Saheli Chatterjee from India and Ms Maria Angelica Salinas from Philippines won individual Gold medals by wowing the judges with their stellar coffee-making skills in the Espresso & Cappuccino category. <\/strong>The remaining Gold medals were snapped up by Ms Anastasiia Butova from Russia and Ms Khuc Thi Bich Ha from Vietnam for proving their finesse in the Signature Drinks category<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With a combination of knowledge as well as practical skills, tourism and hospitality school graduates in Singapore are well-prepared to handle the challenges of a fast-moving industry.<\/p>\n

To compliment a strong academic foundation, students are also required to complete a 6-month internship at leading hotels, resorts, and attractions locally or overseas, as part of the tourism and hospitality school curriculum after completing their Higher Diploma, to gain a real-world understanding of the complexities and demands of the tourism and hospitality sector in Singapore and overseas.<\/p>\n
